Annotated images (Genre and semiotics)

I think for the narrative genre still that the most effective still was the black and white still. I think this was the most effective still as black and white colours are often used in the narrative genre to show the past of a character, such as a past relationship. An example of other media that is used to show a similar effect is in Ed Sheeran’s Castle on the hill in which similar colour saturation visual effects are used to show flashbacks.

I think in the most effective performance still was the photograph effect in which white spots are shown to show lights being cast on the singer. This is the most effective still as light is often cast on the lead singer/performer in performance, suggesting more importance than the other performers. An example of where this is also used is in Queen’s We will rock you.

I think the most effective spectacle still was the colour isolation still because the colour of the cushion is emphasised. Another example of where this is shown is in Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi, in which colour isolation is used to show the contrast in clothing and other items, etc.

I think the most effective intersexual still was the colour isolation still because it emphasises the lips of the singer, a cleche that is often used in the intersexual genre. Another video where this is used is in Girls Aloud’s Something New in which parts of the female body are emphasised with high-constrast clothing.

The most effective edit for the image genre was the colour saturation as this emphasised the car. This is a common feature of many image genre music videos as the performer’s wealth is often very symbolic to them. Another video where the image of wealth is important is in Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise as his wealth is shown to be a key part of his identity.

The most effective cut for the intertextual genre was the use of a aged film mask which made the still appear to be aged, which can suggest, with the religious items surrounding the character, that this scene was out of an adventure film (such as Indiana Jones), an example of where the film is shown to be shot in a format it was not is in Bruno Mar’s Locked Out of Heaven, in which editing effects are used to suggest that the video was filmed in a South American Country, due to the effects that were added to suggest the camcorder-like video quality, an example of intertextuality.
