In depth analysis of student music video

R U Mine

This student music video fits the conventions of an indie rock genre very well. There is a strong element of performance, accompanied with a very defined tone. This is portrayed well through the editing, changing the colour tone to black and white to actually fit with the tone of the music, showing that's what matters for indie rock. As shown in the picture, the focus of the lighting and the mis-en-scene is strictly on the performers, emphasising this with a dark background, with the characters lit up in the foreground.

I feel like this music video lacks the editing that it needs to get it's full amount of marks. The transitions were good and paid good attention to detail and timings but they were fairly simplistic and didn't show a huge range of technical abilities. This could have been improved with a range or transitions and maybe variations in colour. That being said, their cinematography was very good and it detailed that this media group had a strong idea of what they wanted to show.
I think that what we can learn from this music video is that it is good to use interesting cinematography that links well with the song, specially because we are also doing an indie rock song. One thing that we can take away from this music video in terms of making our music video look appealing is that we should use a lot of editing as proof of our technical abilities and to make a look visually interesting.

Ain't No Rest For The Wicked

This shot of the student video shows off great editing techniques. The colour contrast has been changed drastically to show a good idea of editing techniques. It also fits with the odd sounding nature of the song, making the contrast weird to fit with this. In addition to this, it has been made to emphasise the colour on the character whereas the wall and window are given a much darker contrast.

The way that these two images have been superimposed over each other to give the video an artistic effect is a very good idea. It gives the video an abstract feel and helps show that it is not all narrative in a music video. In addition to this, the way in which the writing process has been sped up to match with the lyrics is a good idea that helps with the attention to not only detail but also the music.
I think that we can take a lot from this music video. It is a great example of how editing should be used to show off technical skills but it also works hand in hand with cinematography to make an interesting premise that works well with the indie rock song that they have chosen.

There are many ways that we could take elements from these student videos. It is essential to recognise the audience (like these two videos have done) and tailor the visuals to them. In addition to this, these two videos have a clearly defined genre, knowing what they want to show. We will definitely use this because if we have an idea of the genre then it will be easy choose different shot types ect...
