Music videos of the indie rock genre analysis

Muse's uprising music video genre is performance and concept. as seen by the band playing the song with teddy bears rising from around them in a dystopian like future.
Cinematography: their are many standard shots such as the close up of the musical instruments and the lead vocalist singing. As well as the more conceptual ideas that the music video portrays. There is also an aerial shot of the drummer which is more interesting than other shots. The camera is often panning to show the audience more of the scene. For example with the miniatures and the lit fuse in the first 10 seconds.
Editing: There is slow motion when entering the pre-chorus of the band playing their instruments There is also a green screen involved with the car that the band are in so that they can edit the band being in a miniature village, giving the music video more conceptual ideas.
M-E-S: the lighting used in the video is coming form above the band giving the lead vocalist shadows under his eyes making the video seem a lot darker. Throughout the entire music video there is dark lighting. The props used are musical instruments and the children's toys that are used in the scene.

What can we take from this music video: I quite like the concept that Muse portray in the music video and their use of the miniatures and how they are scaled down to the size of children's toys. This makes for a more interesting music video. We might use the idea of all the TV's in a shop having a certain image on them. Muse use bears for it but we might use the girl that the character has fallen in love with to show what is on the character's mind.

Imagine dragon's believer had a slight performance aspect to the music video genre but also includes a subtle narrative which involves the character that is then fighting his future and past self.
Cinematography: their are a range of bird's eye view shots that then pans over the 2 actors who are boxing. Furthermore the camera zooms in on the lead vocalist as he sits on a chair singing. Also There are even more standard shots such as close ups of the actors and the. There is also lighting coming from the centre between the two characters.
Editing: there are a lot of jump cuts to the beat, in part of the video during the drum beat there is a drastic zoom 3 times on each of the beats. Furthermore during the punches in the boxing scenes one frame which contains the impact of the punch is then cut out to give the punch more emphasis. Furthermore the green screen allows the background to be huge lights of yellow, green and blue.
M-E-S: the Props used are musical instruments, drums bass and guitar while also having boxing gloves and a chair that multiple people sit on. During some of the scenes the band are playing/singing and or boxing.

What we may use from this music video: From this music video we will use a similar lighting technique to the video where the artist is blacked out but there is a solid colour behind him with moving studio lights either side. Furthermore in other shots the character has a kind of black curtain with LED's embedded into the curtain giving the video a more interesting background. Furthermore in the shots of the artist boxing an older self when the camera is tracking motion there is a chequered lighting that then dissolves away and makes the lighting even more effective.

Arctic Monkey's When the sun goes down
Cinematography: The camera is handheld which is very different than the other music videos looked at above. This fits in with the fast paced music of the song. The camera also circles the band while they are playing with cuts in between.

Editing: The video is used in post production heavily, The entire video is in black and white and made to look like it was filmed with an old camera by having celluloid film appear in some parts of the music video. This gives the audience the feel that the video is older than anticipated.

M-E-S: the props used are musical instruments such as guitar bass and drums. The band is then playing at a party where the audience are dancing around the band while they are playing.

What we may take from this music video: From this video we may take some post production techniques which involve making adding a VHS effect along with the black and white and the swapping the speed of the clip and also reversing the clip all adds emphasis on to the character that they are filming.
